To facilitate access and retention of students in higher education, the National Programme of Student Assistance - PNAES has as one of its objectives provide student habitation for those who need it. Characterized the education as a very important topic, the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande - FURG provides student assistance to students, including habitation. The objective is, therefore, in the present qualitative and quantitative research, through the deductive method of approach and the monographic method of procedure, analyze empirical and critically the assistance policy offered to residents from Student Houses of FURG. Therefore, it provided a questionnaire to the student residents of these Student Houses, and the answers were analyzed from literature and legislation related. The relevance of the research relates to the importance of student assistance to reduce socioeconomic inequalities and the quality of education of students, as requirements of social justice and human dignity. The student movements have crucial role in construction and in claim of rights in this context. At the end, measures have been identified to be taken to improve the student assistance in FURG.
